The Community Development and Inspection Department's (CDI) primary mission is to facilitate and coordinate the future growth, development and maintenance of the community.  Vital to that mission is maintaining the community's housing and commercial building stock.

New and/or proposed changes to development begins with a review of the proposed project to verify that the proposed development complies with the city's zoning ordinances.  When compliance with zoning is established, the site plans and building plans are then reviewed by trained community development planning and building specialists.

Services related to this aspect of the department's mission include the issuance of building permits for new construction, building additions and building improvements.  To be certain all buildings meet current standards, the Community Development and Inspection Department provides electrical, plumbing, mechanical and structural inspection services.

St. Clair Shores has long prided itself on the quality of its housing stock and neighborhoods.  To maintain those standards, the Community Development and Inspection Department also enforces property maintenance and nuisance codes to prevent and eliminate blight.
