40th District Court - Location and History

The 40th District Court is located in the John H. Yoe, Sr., District Court Building, a one-story brick structure located at 27701 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores.  The facility is used exclusively by the 40th District Court.

The building was constructed in 1934 to accommodate the village offices and police department of  St. Clair Shores.  The structure was not originally designed for high-volume public use and has undergone several renovations over the years to accommodate court operations.  The most significant alterations occurred in 1978 when new exterior walls were erected to surround the building and expand the available space.  The Municipal Court became a District Court in 1978.

The courthouse is located on the northwest corner of Eleven Mile Road and  Jefferson Avenue, two major thoroughfares in the city of St. Clair Shores.  The area surrounding the building is a mix of government offices, businesses and private homes.  The St. Clair Shores Police Department is located  south of the courthouse (southwest corner of the intersection), directly across Eleven Mile Road.  The Public Library and City Hall are located on the southeast corner of Eleven Mile Road and Jefferson Avenue, diagonally across from the courthouse.
