History

Crime Stoppers of Michigan is part of the largest, volunteer-driven crime fighting institution in the world with organizations across the United States and in 22 countries spanning the globe.

The Crime Stoppers mission is to empower people to make their neighborhoods, schools and businesses safer through anonymous reporting of crime.

Originally named the Alliance for a Safer Detroit, Crime Stoppers of Michigan was founded in 1993 as an affiliate of the Detroit Regional Chamber. Early successes included the Freeway Courtesy Patrol and the Alliance Fugitive Task Force, both of which continue today. In 2002, the Alliance decided to focus exclusively on Crime Stoppers.

Today, Crime Stoppers of Michigan is one of the three largest Crime Stoppers organizations in the United States. A recognized 501(c)(3) charity, it operates in the eight counties of southeastern Michigan: Wayne; Oakland; Macomb; Genesee; Monroe; Washtenaw; Livingston; and St. Clair.

The main office is in Detroit and there are satellite offices in Ann Arbor, Monroe, Highland Park, Flint, and at the Detroit Homicide and Narcotics headquarters.
