[ARCHIVED] Council Connection: Candice B. Rusie on Committees, Boards & Commissions

Council Connection: Candice B. Rusie

St. Clair Shores is truly a wonderful place to live, and that’s in large part due to the generosity of our residents in volunteering their talents and energy. Many civic organizations are active throughout the city, including charities, veteran and fraternal clubs, and groups affiliated with our local sports associations, schools, and churches. From parents raising money through the PTO, coaching a little league team, or leading a scout troop, to people providing life-sustaining support to individuals or animals in need, we depend upon these volunteers to strengthen our community.

You may not know that many city-affiliated committees, commissions, and boards need dedicated members to volunteer their time. These are the people who help plan the annual summer concerts and fireworks show, who work all year to organize the Memorial Day Parade, who sponsor pub crawls and other events to support local businesses, who plant and tend to gardens around the city, who oversee the dog park or community garden, who work to preserve local history or promote local culture, who advocate for the interests of our senior citizens, who assist our library or our parks and recreations department, who review and make recommendations about site plans for new commercial buildings – well, you get the idea!

Hundreds of folks work tirelessly, mainly behind the scenes in conference rooms at City Hall or other city buildings, to help make St. Clair Shores what it is – a fun, friendly, welcoming community with lots to do, great departments and services, and a lot of character. We all appreciate how hard they work to ensure St. Clair Shores is a place we’re all proud to call our home.

Many of our committees are currently in need of new members. If you’re interested in joining your neighbors and volunteering to serve on a city committee, please check out the city website for descriptions of what our various committees do (there’s too much to list here!) and an up-to-date listing of the positions available. If anything interests you, I encourage you to contact current members to find out more and perhaps attend a committee meeting or two. If you decide to pursue becoming a member, fill out and apply to the City Clerk’s office. This application is available on our website, and it’s a simple form that asks for basic information about your background and interests. I promise the subsequent interview is even easier than that!

Even if you don’t feel you can commit to becoming a full-fledged committee member, please don’t let that prevent you from getting involved. Meetings are open to the public, and we encourage you to attend. Share your ideas with members, support the events monetarily or through attendance, and promote, promote, promote! Lend a hand wherever and whenever you can.

There are a lot of great things happening in St. Clair Shores – and great things can’t happen without YOU!
